Al-Quddus [The most sacred & absolute pure]

Al Quddus meaning - 99 names of Allah
Al Quddus - the most sacred and absolute pure

Root Word

Quddus comes from the root qaaf-daal-seen, which points to three main meanings:

  • To be pure and clean.

  • To be far removed from impurity or imperfection.

  • To be sacred or very blessed

Al Quddus Meaning

Linguistically, Quddus refers to cleanliness or taharah(purification). Allah is absolutely pure in all his attributes, in all His essence. Allah, Al-Quddoos is ‘clean’ or free from any partner, spouse, or child, from death, injustice, lying, forgetfulness, error, poverty, and stinginess.

Al-Quddus is mentioned in the Quran two times, one in surah Jummah, and the other in surah Hashr.

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure . . . [Quran, 59:23]

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. [Quran, 62:1]

As for the other implication of the meaning Al-Quddus, the most sacred and very blessed automatically makes all the sense.

Allah, being free of any worldly needs and attributes, makes Him superior to us, makes Him sacred and blessed.

Reflection

Al-Quddus, Allah is above all material things and worldly imperfections. His being and His qualities, and attributes are far and beyond even what the human mind can ever comprehend. No matter how much we try, we can never understand the glory of Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala in its perfection.

With every new knowledge, Allah comes in front of us with something that blows our minds. Be it His magnificence, be it His glory, power, mercy, or love.

An Imperfect Journey to Perfection

The beauty of humans lies in attempts to discover God, and our very imperfect attempts take us to the path to perfection, which is the whole essence of our existence. We meet our lord, Allah, at every step that we take towards Him. We meet ourselves on the path to knowing Allah in His perfection, not our ability and capacity.

The beautiful contrast here between the imperfection of humans, and the perfection of Allah leaves me in awe.

To purify ourselves, we have to break in front of the most perfect; accept our flaws in front of the most perfect, Al-Quddus. Accept our weaknesses to the most powerful. Accept our neediness to the one who is free of any need. Accept our mortality to everliving.

Such as Allah is Al-Quddus, the purest, His blessings are beyond not only our deserving but also in its entirety.

Isn't it a blessing if there is nothing that seems like purifying your heart, ALLAH's mercy can? Submission to Allah can cure the hardest of hearts. Repentance to Allah can even bring dead hearts to life.

Have we ever thought of ways our absolute pure God has blessed us to purify ourselves? Through prayer, supplications, Sadqa, through anything that is being done for HIM, in his way can save us, and purify us. SubhanALLAH and Alhumdulillah.
