An utterance is called لفظ.

The utterances are of two types;

  1. Meaningless مهمل - the utterances that do not make any sense are meaningless utterances.

  2. Meaningful موضوع - the utterance that makes sense. There are two types of utterances.

Words مفرد

If an utterance is made up of one word, it is called مفرد. It is a single word. There are only three types of mufrid words in the Arabic language.

  • Ism - Noun اسم

Name of a person, place, thing, idea or concept.

  • Fa’il - Verb فعل

    A word that shows action.

It has time or tense attached to it.

  • Harf - Particle حرف

A word that is neither an Ism nor a verb is called a harf in Arabic.

It does not make sense alone.

To make sense it is used with a noun or a verb.

Compounds مركب Mapping Arabic Language

The other type of utterance is a compound. It is a combination of two or more words.

There are two types of compounds

Complete sentence  جملة مفيد / مركب تام

Combination of words from which an information, order, desire, command, or wish is understood. Eg. He is a good man.

Essentially there are two types of sentences in Arabic.

  • Nominal Sentence جملة اسميّة

A sentence starting with a noun.

  • Verbal Sentence جملة فعليّة

A sentence starting with a verb.

Incomplete sentence جملة غير مفيد / مركب ناقص

A compound, also called a fragment is a combination of words from which no information, order, or desire is understood. Or you can say, it is not a complete sentence, but a part of a sentence. Eg. Good man.

  • Possessive Phrasse  مركب اضافى

Phrase or fragment that shows possession.

  • Descriptive Phrase مركب توصيفى

Phrase or fragment that describes a noun.

  • Indicative Phrase مركب اشارى

  • Prepositional Phrase مركب جاري
